It's all a hot mess

Inspired by a wise German professor, this week's blog starts with something deeply profound.

"The reality is that everyone's life is a mess."

Said by aforementioned wise German professor.
Potentially first coined by Winston Churchill.

In other words, it's all just a hot mess.
All of it.

So why even bother to try to clean things up. Why pretend it's not a mess when it definitely is.

Here a couple of examples of the definition of "hot mess" in case you think your life is never a hot mess.

  • When one's thoughts or appearance are in a state of disarray but they maintain an undeniable attractiveness or beauty. (Urban Dictionary)
  • a person or thing that is a mess, as in being disorganized, confused,or untidy, yet remains attractive or appealing: (Dictionary.com)
  • a person or thing that is spectacularly unsuccessful or disordered. (Google)

I don't know if those definitions make you feel better, but I love them. Sometimes there is just no better way to describe an action than "spectacularly unsuccessful." And hey, that is a normal thing, so good thing there is also that "undeniable attractiveness" in such an ultimate fail too.

In the past couple of months, I've seen Inside Out three times because I love how it personifies our emotions and their messiness. And I think we are a lot more like Sadness than we like to admit. Because Sadness is just...a soggy mess. I mean, she clearly states that she likes crying so she can obsess over the weight of life's problems.
Not that any of us do that.
Oh wait. YESTHEHECKWEDO.
And if you don't, check your tear ducts--they might be clogged and you should get them checked out.

There are ups and downs in life for sure, but I think more of us are more ready to fall apart at any second than we like to admit. I am genuinely happy most days, but that doesn't mean that I don't have a million other emotions racing through my head that threaten to commandeer the control station, leaving me on the ground crying and obsessing over the weight of life's problems.

We human beings are terribly complex. Which is why we are all messy. Great and terrible hot messes. Functional for the most part. Pretending we know what we're doing when hey guess what--no one knows what they're doing. Live anyways and embrace the hot mess.
